Private Piano Lessons
Piano lessons are offered at our studio in Fountain Valley for students of all ages. Lessons are available for first time beginners as well as highly advanced students. Students may choose to work on a variety of styles from classical to popular styles. Students work one on one with the piano instructor in private lessons. The private piano lessons meet once weekly for 30 minutes, 45 minutes or one hour. We have some students who are in private lessons for their own personal enjoyment and others who participate in various exams and competitions that are presented by local music teacher organizations. Students may also participate in our in house evaluation, the Performance Exams, as well as the two annual recitals that are held in January and June of each year.
For beginning piano students ages 3 - 7, we generally recommend that they start in the Harmony Road Music Course group piano class. In these classes, students learn all of the fundamentals of the piano, including technique, ear training, note reading, rhythm training, as well as ensemble playing and solfege singing. If a younger student is a transfer student, they can be evaluated in a free introductory lesson and either placed the class that best suits their background or in private lessons. We recommend private lessons to transfer students older than 7 years old who have had some experience in private or group lessons.
Adults students have the unique opportunity to begin their piano studies, or return after taking piano lessons as children. Adult piano students can learn at their own pace, and are welcome to partipate in the annual student performances, or in adult workshops and seminars. If you are an adult who has "always wanted to learn the piano" or someone who took lessons as a child and would like to recapture those skills, now is the perfect time to get back into lessons.
Intermediate and advanced level students looking for specialized training in piano will find many opportunities for advancement. Many of our piano faculty members have graduate degrees in piano performance, are members of music teacher organizations, making it possible for their students to participate in annual festivals, competitions and evaluations. The studios for piano students are spacious and well equipped with high quality grand pianos. Students can work on developing their technique, or expanding their repertoire with any of our excellent piano instructors.
Recitals and Evaluations
Students are encouraged to participate in our two annual recitals each year. When they are ready, piano students are encouraged to participate in the Certificate of Merit (CM) Evaluation which is sponsored by the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC). Students who participate in the CM evaluation, are encouraged to take the group music theory courses as well in order to more fully prepare for the exam. This year we are also adding the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program assessments.
